Lucky Star Makeup Look

by Wycee @ Nerdy Girl Makeup

I've been incorporating stars in some of my nighttime makeup looks ever since I got my hands on "Good Luck Star" stencils from the MAC & Carine Roitfeld Collection. I like to change up the quantity, placement, and colors of the stars, but for this look I just stuck to the 2 different-sized stars that come in one stencil, only applied it next to my left eye, and used black for both stars. I like the perfect star shape the stencil provides, but I think it would be just as cute to freehand it!

Is Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner the Perfect Eyeliner?

by Teri Cosenzi @ Beautiful Makeup Search

I haven't used an eyeliner pencil for years. Most of the time I just smudge a dark shadow on my lash line for liner and call it a day; it works for me. I haven't particularly been on the hunt for a new eyeliner, but when about five or six people randomly either asked my opinion or tell me how much they love Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner, I knew I needed to try it.

Too Faced Better Than False Lashes

by Wycee @ Nerdy Girl Makeup

Too Faced Better Than False Lashes isn't your traditional mascara -- it's a lash extension system that claims to be like brushing on false lashes. Combining mascara and fiber is not new -- there are mascaras out there that already have nylon fibers built in, so what makes this Too Faced product different is that the nylon fibers are separate from the mascara giving you control of how much you want to apply. Check out my step-by-step pictures, and see if this will work for you!

New Common Core Standards

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

If you work or attend school in Alpine School District (or possibly anywhere else...I only ASD has been sending letters home), you likely know that Utah has let go of their USOE core in favor of the nearly-natiowide Common Core Standards. I've recently attended a workshop on what this means for the state of education in our...well, state...and would like to share some of this with you.

Firstly, I will say I was (and still am) a bit nervous about what implementing this Core will mean for teachers. At the least, my childrens' educational experiences are likely to be very different from my own. Basically, the Common Core focuses on aligning with the CCR (college and career readiness) expectations and closing the 'gap' between high school and college. This means an increase in reading nonfiction texts and in informative writing, as well as different math standards designed to trim down superfluous content in favor of going deeper with CCR content.

Here are some things I like about the core:

Gradual Increase in NF Texts: I was worried that the new core meant I as an elementary school teacher would be required to only have my students write nonfiction text, as well as preventing me from instilling them with a love of reading through great literature (TBH, I don't know that anyone has gained a LOVE of reading through informative texts...maybe historical nonfiction, but...). Fear not! The Common Core gradually ups the ratio of literary to informational texts. According to their Standards Document in Reading, a 4th grade student would be reading 50% literary, 50% informational texts. This gradually increases until at 12th grade student is reading 30% literary material and 70% informational material.

Trimming of Superfluous Mathematics Content: I've often felt that we in the US are trying to compete with other nations by cramming too much into too little time. Hopefully these standards will alleviate that.

One to One ratio with CCR expectations: CCR expectations were developed with research into...well, what colleges and employers look for in a ready-to-go candidate! I feel 'closing the gap' between college and high school for all...not just the AP-goers...is laudable, and each grade level standards are a developmentally-appropriate version of the CCR expectations.

Does not limit teachers: The Common Core acknowledges --even expects--that some students will reach the grade-level standard before the end of the year. It allows teachers to supplement and extend the content if needed.

Things that concern me:

No more Content-based classes in 7-12: Classes like Geometry, Algebra II, and AP Calculus are a thing of the past. Instead classes will have names like "Grade 7 maths" and teach a variety of mathematic concepts. This may be more confusing than a problem, but what I don't like is that if a student wants to be prepared for AP Calculus (taught AP Calculus material), they must get on the Honors maths track at grade 9.

To learn more about the Common Core, go to http://www.corestandards.org/

I know there were a few more likes and dislikes, but right now I have to head to bed and prepare for job fair tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Fourth of July

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

July has been a fun month! I wish I had pictures, but I kept forgetting to bring my camera for all the entertainment. ;-)

I went to Colonial and Freedom Days in Provo with some friends on July 1, which was super! We all dressed up (I was VERY patriotic in red, white and blue) and had some good food. There are SO many booths at Freedom Days! I could spend all day there looking at everything and trying all the food. I highly recommend this event, but bring money and an empty stomach!

Then July 2 was the Stadium of Fire! Janette, TMTHCB, and I went up to the bottom of the Hike the Y trailhead (they had gone up to watch the balloons be launched that morning) and got to see the SoF in a whole new way! In case any of you didn't know, they have released the aerial restrictions here in Utah so there were a bunch of fireworks going on all over the valley. Tayton kept asking, "Is that the finale?" every time a bunch went off at once. When the SoF finally rolled around, we knew it. They were HUGE and it was amazing. Then Janette and I made our way through the crazy traffic, parked and walked to her apartment. I spent the night there and she came to church with me the next afternoon. Fun times!

July 4th was fun, too! The kids marched in the parade, I stayed home and cleaned. Then we got together with family for food and fireworks! Janette's friend Naomi came to watch with us, I hope she had a good time. Admittedly, our family can be a little weird (what with repeating the names of the fireworks and all) but we have fun. It was strange this year, because our fireworks were overshadowed by LOTS of aerial fireworks from the surrounding houses. It was hard to concentrate on our little ones when there are huge blossoms of fire in the sky. :-S Next year I say we don't even spend money on fireworks! Just get a few sparklers and pop-its and watch the show!

A few other things: I've cut my hair, Andrew's Homecoming chain is getting shorter (pic to come, I hope), and we are looking forward to seeing everyone this month! Wow! How time flies!!!

No Jar Questions Today

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

I'm just writing really quickly on my way to bed. Firstly: This has been a GREAT week! Thursday I was observed by the BYU liaison (that's the lady who is over all of the student teachers and interns in the district), and she said I absolutely knocked it out of the park! In addition, the principal came in to observe my mentor teacher while I was teaching (he didn't know that) and stayed through my lesson. Afterwards, my mentor teacher and the liaison told me he was asking them if they thought I'd like to teach fifth grade in that area (meaning at that school). How fun! Only my papers are in for my mission so I would have had to turn him down. But it's still cool knowing he thought I was good enough to be looking at me for a job offer! ^_^

Mission Prep was fun, Brother Brad Wilcox came and shared some fun stories (and said hi to me, he knows me from some classes). Some of the most memorable quotes:

"Live every day so that when you wake up in the morning Satan goes, "Oh no. She's awake!"
~From a Sister Missionary's quote book

"In Spanish sign language, the signs for Savior and Missionary are the same."
~Brad Wilcox, quoting a brother from his mission

I'd also like to say how grateful I am for the "restrictions" placed on us by the gospel. I have a friend right now who is not a member and has very different values than I do. She's a good person, but since I met her she's really fallen apart. She's drunk a lot, can't control her rage, and hangs out with friends who are very into "hooking up." She lets people sleep over in her "suite..." Basically, very against everything that is right. I look at her journal and what she says to me when we talk...she hates her life! She has all that "freedom," does whatever she wants, follows no rules, and yet SHE IS MISERABLE! She's always angry and hurt and disappointed...I almost feel like I want to slap her up side the head and say "GET IT TOGETHER!" or tell her that I know why she feels this way and help her turn her life around. But she's pretty resistant to any change right now, especially any she sees as taking away her freedom. But I look at my life, and then at hers, and...I am so much happier! I have stress, things aren't going perfect for me, but I can look back on my day or week and say: "This has been a good week!" Where as she looks back and hates her life. I hope some day I'm able to help her turn around, my heart just aches for her.

Anyway, that's today!

Instead of painting your lashes like conventional mascaras, blinc mascara forms tiny no-smudge, water-resistant tubes around your lashes. Once applied, these mascara tubes bind to your lashes and cannot run, smudge, clump, or flake, even if you cry or rub your eyes. Whether your daily activities take you from the office, to your sweaty workout or out to dinner, your lashes will look as good in the evening as they did when you first applied blinc in the morning. blinc mascara will add volume and length to give you a radiant natural look that lasts all day. Only when you are ready for removal, the tubes will effortlessly slide off your lashes into your hand without the use of a harsh makeup remover. All it takes is the combination of warm water and gentle pressure, from your fingertips, a washcloth or water pressure and the tubes will slide off your lashes effortlessly. Upon removal you will actually see the tiny mascara tubes in your hand! Great for sensitive eyes, mascara from blinc has been clinically tested to be non-irritating making it ideal for contact lens wearers and active people in search of a mascara whose look, hold and ease of removal is without compromise.

Beauty Squared Round-Up for September 27, 2015

It's Beauty Squared Round-Up time! We've been delinquent. September has been a very, very busy month.

  • InStyle rounds up the best beauty looks on the 2015 Emmy red carpet.
  • Jane Fonda (she's a spectacular 77 years old!) was in Toronto for TIFF this year, to promote her film Brenda In Youth. Beauty Geeks spoke to MUA Eddie Malter about the look Jane wears in the film, and the vastly different one he created for her for the TIFF red carpet.
  • You've got to see the beauty looks for Marc Jacobs' Spring 2016 runway show. Think the iconic looks of Ziggy Stardust and 1940s starlights, but the morning after.

  • Do you want some Marilyn Monroe beauty tricks? Here you go.
  • Basic beauty tips: how to contour your eyes.
  • Dolce & Gabbana's Sophia Loren-inspired lipstick.
  • How to:
  • And finally, Megan Koester took a class called "Wow-Factor Makeup for Instagram" and wrote about it for Jezebel. Yes, there are classes being taught on how to do your makeup so that you can take selfies. Sigh, I guess how you look in real life doesn't matter as much as how you look on someone's smartphone. Diorshow Mascara by Dior. This mascara is supposed to give you thick, long and curled lashes for that desired false lash effect. Apparently Makeup artists all over the world use Dior to create "show stopping lashes". The Mascara comes in 3 colors black, brown and blue. I'm sure everyone knows the name "Dior". It's a […]

Rise Up (aka I Can’t Believe I Have to Write a Blog Post About White Supremacy)

by Stephanie Drenka @ Stephanie DrenkaStephanie Drenka

“Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.” (Mahatma Gandhi) I’ve tried to write this post more times than I can count. I wonder if the hesitation is because doing so will solidify that what is happening in our country is very real, and my heart breaks to think it is so. I considered myself fairly woke before this week, but Charlottesville and the aftermath have opened my narrow, almond-shaped eyes. I spent my Saturday in an all-day planning session for the Dallas Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation committee followed by the Dallas […]

Hi everyone! When it comes to makeup, mascaras are definitely the bane of my existence! If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I have the HARDEST time with mascaras; they either give me raccoon eyes, flake on me, or do both. I had found my holy grail, but it has been …

10 (or however many) Things I've Learned From Teaching Kindergarten.

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

...Or stream of consciousness type thingie.

1. Germs. They are real. And evil. EVIL!

2. Nosebleeds seem to be contagious. Either that, or somebody is punching somebody.

3. Kids have no fear. Their idea of a perfect recess game is "Let's run through the play area with this rope stretched between us and see how many people we can knock down!"

4. Kids are so much more patient than I am with each other. They don't mind helping the girl who can only use half her body do things over and over, and they teach each other well.

5. If there is a way to draw on it, they will draw on it.

6. Hand sanitizer is slippery. Especially on the floor.

7. Whining. Don't do it.

8. It's better to try your best and do it wrong than to sit there and not do anything.

9. If you do it wrong, big erasers are magical.

10. Ticonderoga pencils stink.

11. If you have to sharpen a pencil 10 times a day, you need a new pencil. Or to stop drawing on things!

12. Teachers have to have an iron stomach. If it can come out of your body, I've had to clean it up. Or at least keep kids away from it until the custodian comes.

13. No matter how slow, defiant, mischievous, smart-alecky, loud, soft, etc. the child...they can always worm their way into your heart and make you want to make their world better for years to come.

14. 13 is not an unlucky number...right.

I'll be going on vacation very soon and generally stay out of the sun. Since we're staying at a beach resort, do you think sunning for just a few days is safe?

No. Run - don't walk - away from tanning, even just to bring out charming freckles or a gentle flush of red. Many women were raised to cover themselves with baby oil and literally "fry." Cosmetics and anti-aging products certainly...

Face Lift Makeup Tips

by admin @ Beautiful Being

If you have recently experienced a face lift, you may still be getting used to all of the attention that it draws. Some people may ask what is different about you while others may just take a second glance and wonder what it is that you have changed. Sometimes, if you took some time off to rest and recover, people might think that you came back from "vacation" well rested, relaxed, and with a new demeanor. No matter what everyone else is saying, or not saying, you want to make the most of your new look. Makeup is one want to enhance your new features.

As I prepare to change up my clothes and start to layer on the sweaters and heavier items, I change up the makeup in my makeup bag this time of year as well. There are, of course, essentials that I need for fall; I picked up the following new makeup bag essentials on eBay.

Summer / Fall Skincare Routine

by noreply@blogger.com (Rachel) @ Minimalist Beauty Reviews

I haven't posted a routine since the beginning of the year since I've been dealing with constant skin issues. Now, my skin has finally calmed down in what feels like ages, and I can get away with wearing little to no foundation or powder. I thought I'd post a routine for those of you who suffer from hormonal or genetic acne and are still struggling with choosing the right products. This has always been a challenge for me because I risk dehydrating and irritating my skin while treating the acne, and then causing more acne and oil when treating the dryness and flakes.

I've heard from many sources that birth control is an excellent way of managing acne, but I'd prefer to ingest hormones as a last resort. So far, this routine is helping aplenty.

My skin type: Normal-Combination, sometimes dehydrated and flakey, slightly oily on T-zone area by mid-day.
Prone to deep cystic acne, blackheads, enlarged pores, and comedones

MORNING:

1. Wash with DHC Mild Soap (any light, non-drying soap will do) or rinse with only warm water to take off the impurities and oils from during the night.
2. (Optional) Dab tea tree oil or acne medication on blemishes. I personally do not dilute my tea tree oil before applying, but most people prefer to.
3. A moisturizer that contains SPF. I've been rotating high-end and drugstore brands; anything will do as long as it is moisturizing. I prefer to use only products with SPF during the day, but you are welcome to use a moisturizer that doesn't contain sun protection properties.
4. High coverage sunscreen for face and eyes. My current favorites are Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection SPF 55 PA+++ and Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream SPF 32 PA+++. Wait a few minutes for everything to dry before applying makeup.

Because my morning routine is very simple, I cram in all the treatment and renewing steps at night.

NIGHT:

1. Wash off all the day's dirt, pollution, makeup, and oils from the face and neck with a cleansing oil. I use DHC Deep Cleansing Oil.
2. Cleanse with a tough duty cleanser to clean off any remaining dirt or makeup and residue from the cleansing oil. I recommend using liquid facial soap, cleansing pad/cloths, or foaming facial cleanser formulas. I am currently rotating between Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub and Dove Daily Hydrating Cleansing Cloths.
3. A couple times a week, exfoliate with a salicylic acid scrub. A good sign you need to exfoliate is when blackheads appear. I recommend using an aspirin mask (instructions easily found through Google) or St. Ives Medicated Apricot Scrub for Oily/Acne Prone Skin.
4. Tone with a gentle toner. Try not to use toners with alcohol. Any brand will do, even one from the drugstore.
5. (Optional) Use an exfoliant serum like Bliss Peeling Groovy, Clinique Turnaround Concentrate, or Estee Lauder Idealist Skin Refinisher. This helps your skin absorb the other skincare products as well as slough off dead cells.
6. Wait a couple minutes, then apply a moisturizing, anti-aging, or renewing serum. I like to use Jurlique's serums for brightening the skin.
7. Apply tea tree oil on any blemishes or pimples. Dilute with water if pure tea tree oil is too strong.
8. Apply a face and eye cream containing retinol. A great drugstore choice is Roc.
9. (Optional) Apply an additional moisturizer over the retinol cream. I am currently rotating between Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, Egyptian Magic Cream, and DHC Virgin Olive Oil.

You do not have to use a retinol moisturizer every night. I started out with using retinol maybe once or twice a week, and then increased the frequency to 3 or 4 times a week. However, the combination of tea tree oil and retinol along with salicylic acid exfoliation is what helps really bring the acne down, so be sure to stick to it!
Of course, also pay attention to your health. Drink plenty of water, get enough exercise and sleep, and eat as many fruits and veggies as possible.
Hope this helps! Let me know if it works for you!

I take my time applying these Sally Hansen nail strips (meaning I don't skip any of the prep steps), so I get a good amount of wear time with these (about 2 weeks). Here's to a sparkly 2013! :)

Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara Review.

Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara Review.

by Teri Cosenzi @ Beautiful Makeup Search

I always get excited when a new mascara launches, especially when it claims to create "super fat, long and sexy lashes that will withstand all kinds of hot and heavy situations". I am the first to admit that I like the sound of that, especially when they added that it "boosts lash volume 13.7x". If you have read about the new Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara, you may have noticed the claim of it lasting through sex; I think that is a unique claim to make.

Beauty Squared Round-Up for September 6, 2015

by noreply@blogger.com (beautysquared) @ beauty squared

Hello, and a happy Saturday to you!

  • It's a trend that's been around for awhile, but it's taken off again recently. Eyebrow slits.
  • There are some beauty rituals you should skip in the days just before your wedding (or any major event when you want to look your best).
  • We're in that transitional period where summer fades into autumn. What nail colour do you wear that's not completely un-summery but not entirely autumn either? Here are five ideas for you.
  • Fake eyelashes can be hella intimidating, but here are some tips if you're keen to wear them!
  • Some great makeup tricks that can make you look younger.
  • Kohl eyeliner, or kajal as it is known in different parts of the world, has been around for centuries. XOVain takes a look at some of the best kajal products.
  • Here's part one of Mascara Wars' Makeup Artist's Guide to Deep Black Skintones. Even if you're not a makeup artist, it's worth a read, especially if you've got dark skin.
  • Do you sleep in your makeup? Even just sometimes? Well, you should read this.
  • And on the flip side of that, here are ten beauty things you can be doing to your skin while you sleep.
  • Did you know that common anti-aging ingredients such as retinol lose their efficacy when they're exposed to air and light? That means that anti-aging moisturizers packaged in jars, requiring you to dip your fingers into them aren't as effective as those that come in tubes or bottles.
  • The 10 (Unbreakable) Laws of Always Looking Polished.

Personal History Jar Questions 1, 2, 3

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

Yesterday was the last day of my solo teaching. I'd post pictures of my students, but I think that's illegal. XP

I'm really going to miss Wasatch. The teachers are really great, I really feel like I have a connection with the school because of Mommy having taught there. Jane, the secretary, even found an old letter of recommendation for Mommy when she was cleaning old files and gave it to me! And my mentor teacher and I are great friends, which just makes everything better.

Today Janette was doing a friend's hair for Preference and used me as a guinea pig. XD She took pics, I'll have to see if I can get them from her and post them. She did a BEAUTIFUL half-updo on me, all curled with rhinestones in it and ULTRA glittery hair spray (Seriously, two sprays of this and I'm STILL having glitter come off every time I shake my head). It only took her 35 minutes to do the whole thing! Anyway, when her friend came she did an even more amazing job on her! Janette has a real talent.

Okay! I have these Personal History Jar Questions to help me hopefully journal/blog/update SOMETHING more. So! Questions 1-3 today!

Question 1: Are there any family heirlooms in your possession? Tell about them and how you came to acquire them.

Well, I don't really have anything right now, because parents and grandparents aren't gone yet. XP I don't even know what I "should" get. *shrug* I do have this peach and cream teddy bear I got from Grandpa Bell's house when they were selling his posessions, and a little chair that I think is from my Mom. I have a special little cupboard that I think Grandpa Bell made that was given to me by my Mom (I think). I have some quilts from various people, both sides of the family. I have a blue bowl that was designated to be a family heirloom, and a little round box with angels on it from Grandma Rene (I can't remember who it belonged to before that).

Question 2: Are you involved in any clubs or extracurricular activities?

Not really, now. Student Teaching has been eating up all my time. In my spare time I like to read and daydream, usually I get home in time to plan and fall into bed. I like to dress up and to go to the mall with Janette and Alicia. I love to just spend time with family, and I'd like to start cooking a bit more.

Question 3: Describe each member of your family.

Okay, here goes! XD Hope I don't end up inadvertently offending anyone. This is just from what I see or remember or...yeah. This is supposed to be FUN!

Immediate Family

Daddy: Patient, easygoing, loyal. Totally trustworthy. Solid, not the solid that means "cool," but solid...like steady and reliable.

Mommy: Changeable, creative, ULTRA-caring, senstitive, willing, helpful, clean, worryful, loving.

Andrew: A-MA-ZING. Inspiration, growth, funny.

Janette: Miss Personality to the MAX! Makes everywhere you go with her fun. Smiley. Boisterous, tomboy-ish and yet feminine, sort of like Jo in Little Women. Unafraid. Successful. Smart. Talented. A leader. Condfidante. A peacemaker.

Rebecca: Like me. Reader, a bit moody, quiet, mysterious, pokey, beautiful, flexible, serving.

Gordon: Really growing! Troubled, tempermental, teen (ha!), handsome, proud, forgetful, distracted, smart.

Catherine: The baby. Growing just too fast. Beautiful, artistic, flowing, floating, hugs and smiles, fashionista.

Grandmas and Grandpas

Grandma Rene: Patient, near-saint, pusher, wise, optimistic, fixer, good listener, tickles backs, caring

Grandpa Fuja: Attention-liker, sensitive, likes to learn and show knowledge, always needs to be "in the know," can't keep a secret (XD), phone dialer, football obsessed (sports obsessed), food lover and talker.

Grandma Bowns: Sensitive, lonely sometimes, loves company, talker and laugher, fun mom.

Extended

Randy: talker, a little intimidating, teaser, opinion sharer.
Jennifer: fashion setter, great seamstress, involved.
Shayna: Sporty, good mom.
Shantel: Grounded, creative, lucky, finding her feet, fun.
Sharielle: Pretty, impressionable.
Jameson: talkative, opinionated, likes attention and praise.
Alexa: CUTE, princess.

Danette: Fit, care, chill.
Paul: Funny, eyes like Daddy's, talented.
Madison: late-night whispers, fun stories, thoughtful.
Rachel: Talented, athletic, laughing.
Kenya: Tan (!), runner, trampoline-jumper.
Erin: Petite doll, smiley
Matt: Fun boy, friend
Jacob: Conscientious, serious, boy of few words

Tannin: Serious, sensitive, perfectionist, thought-provoking, fun, caring, educational adviser
Megan: Small, bacon-lover, creative, smart, patient, loving
Tayton: SMART, Thomas train-lover, verbal master, curious, thinker, laugher, toe-runner
Hunter: "I WANT!" (ha), fun, dancer, tackler, sporty
Cumorah: knows what she wants, little doll, smiler, has me wrapped around her finger
?: Don't know yet!

Daniel: Confidante, piano-teacher, late nights and sleepovers, the smartest guy I know, patient, an AMAZING laugh that makes me want to laugh too, board game master, nintendo player, ping pong champion, mask scarer, advisor, strappy-shoe buyer.
Wendy: Caring, friend, girl-talk advisor (XD), lovely, so fun
Spencer: Tiny cousin, BIG cousin, funny-face maker, laughter machine, dancer, toddler

Diane and Karen: Barbie players, self-esteem boosters.

Phew! Well, that's about it! I couldn't get EVERYBODY, because the list would be WAY long, but I think I got most of the extended family.

Love you all!

Review: blinc mascara AMPLIFIED | Stephanie Drenka

Stephanie Drenka

I was wandering through the mall today shopping for dresses to wear in my engagement photos and decided to stop in Sephora to see what was new. Their mascara display caught my eye, because I’ve been unimpressed with my current L’Oreal Telescopic mascara. Was so excited to see that blinc had come out with a new version of their notorious waterproof mascara, blinc mascara AMPLIFIED. I quickly snatched up a tube along with a Shiseido eyelash curler (my favorite– works the best with my Asian eye shape). My eyelashes are basically non-existent. It’s pretty tough for any mascara to make …

Personal History Jar Questions 150, 441, 324

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

Today the theme in Sacrament Meeting was Home and Family. We had some great talks. One of the things that was talked about was preparing for future family. A few things that were brought up:

  • Prepare for responsibility. You will have it. Take responsibility for your actions, learn to be responsible for what you have and what you are in charge of. Because soon you will be responsible for a lot more.
  • Prepare for pressure. Life doesn't get easier as you go along. That's just the way it is. It may seem to get easier as you become accustomed to the pressure, but the pressure doesn't go away. Don't hang on the the promise of college graduation and think it's going to be easy street from there. We live with pressure, and if you don't learn to handle it and be happy you won't be happy.
  • Learn to talk to, rely on and love the Lord. He's there to help! When you realize you're not alone and go to Him and can keep that in mind, you will have comfort and be able to hurdle anything life throws at you.
  • Learn to take the focus off yourself. Right now is a very self-oriented time. "Satan doesn't care what you think about yourself, so long as you keep thinking about yourself." If you find ways to focus on others during this me-centered college time, it will become a habit and will bless your life. This isn't to say you don't need some me time sometimes, but me time shouldn't be all the time.
  • Learn to be grateful. Being grateful automatically makes you think about the good. If you can find something to be grateful for to a person you don't like much, you'll have started thinking about good things about that person. If you can think of one thing to be thankful to God for about your day, you will have started thinking about the good things about your day.
  • Be in the world AND not of the world. Don't just "hunker down" and wait for sin to blow over. Be active, be involved. Make the world a better place. But don't fall for this "I must be tolerant of everything" viewpoint so many people have today. The speaker talked about a girl who got herself in trouble because she didn't want to "judge" her boyfriend. She ended up going with him while a drug deal went down and got herself in trouble. Her excuse was "I didn't do the drugs, and thank heaven I didn't judge him!" So many times we're afraid to judge sin as sin! It doesn't mean we have to judge the person as "a bad person," just a person who sins! Just because you like the person doesn't mean you have to like the sin.
All right, on to the questions. I decided to switch this up and do random numbers of questions to try and get a variety.

Question 150: Do you have a testimony? Write down the things you do believe and you know are true?

I do have a testimony. I know that God lives and loves His children, and me. He knows me personally and wants the best for me. He knows what he's doing and I see so much evidence of that every day! He has a plan for us to be happy, and all of His commandments are to make us happy. He has prophets on the Earth today, the most recent being Thomas S. Monson. Revelation continues today, God still speaks. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is God's gospel restored in it's entirety. I love God, and I know He loves me.

Question 441:What instrument do you wish you could play and why?

I wish I could play the flute and the guitar. The flute is so beautiful and folksy, and yet it can be in marching bands and other types of bands. I love how pretty it sounds when Janette plays it. I wish I could play the guitar because you can sing and accompany yourself. I've always admired teachers who could sing with their classes and play along on the guitar. You could do that on the piano, but a lot of schools don't have a piano and a guitar is portable.

Question 325: What was your least favorite subject in school? What was your favorite?

Growing up, at least in elementary school, I don't think I had a least favorite subject. In high school, because it got harder, I think Chemistry and Calculus were in a way my least favorite, but they were all tough. My favorite subject has always been music. Music in Elementary School, and Choir and Orchestra in High School and Jr. High.

Consideration

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

Considerate people...

1) Think about the people in the house they're visiting. Are they going to bed? What do you do? (HINT: The answer is NOT make fun of them for going to bed and then stay up as late and be as loud as you want.)

2) Plan things ahead of time. I don't care how cute he is, how fun the activity, how many people you invited. If you don't ask the parents/grandparents/roomates ahead of time, don't expect them to be happy when you steamroll over them.

3) Listen when said people/parents/grandparents/etc. complain, and don't do it again. Otherwise they will have to smack you.

4) DO NOT pretend you want to spend time with relatives when all you want is a place to sleep. They will inevitably leave their whole day open in case you want to do something, then be disappointed when you shop, visit other people, shop, eat out, visit other people, and crash at their house. Also they will fix you meals that you won't eat. This usually leads to leftovers that get too mushy and icky to eat.

5) DO NOT act as if an employee is stupid. Unless they are directly and verbally insulting you (i.e.: "Hey, you ugly lady with the stupid order!") or giving you the finger there is no call for it. It doesn't help them help you any better, and makes them want to foul up your order/appointment/kid just because you're a jerk.

6) DO NOT call people out on Facebook. Just don't do it. Nobody else wants to hear about how so-and-so is an idiot and insulted whoshisface in third grade and dunked your dolly in the toilet. If you have a problem, talk to the person face-to-face. Calmly is usually good. The internet blows everything up, and unless your an egocentric bonehead you'll regret having posted in your time of anger.

7) Reply to messages. Even if it's a "Hey, I got this and I'm thinking about how to reply to you." Otherwise the sender will resend the message. And send it to your alternate email. And Facebook you. And hunt down your physical address and send you a letter. And Facebook your friends to tell you to reply to them. And email you again.

8) Say things nicely. There ARE nice ways to say, "I think that dress is hideous on you" without going, "OMG THAT DRESS MAKES YOU LIKE LIKE A FAT COW!" And better ways to say "I disagree" than saying, "What is WRONG with you?! Do you have a BRAIN? You have got to be the stupidest person I have ever met!"

9) DO NOT guilt people into doing things. This is hard, because the guilter often doesn't realize they're doing it. If they don't want to do something, moaning about how much you've done for them and how they can't do this LITTLE THING and how you just feel SO BAD and they can't help you and the whole family thinks they're a recluse...it doesn't make them want to do it more, and really just makes them feel annoyed.

10) Compliment people! If you think a girl looks pretty today or a color looks good on a guy, TELL THEM! They won't hate you for it, and it just might make their day.

11) Consider where the other person is coming from. When you complain all day about how people stay on their cell phones, baby their kids too much, are senile, etc. the end result is a lack of empathy on your part, a feeling of betrayal on the part of anyone who relates in any way to your 'victim,' and the general wish on the part of anyone who is listening to stuff your mouth with old socks.

12) DO NOT use "individualism" as an excuse to be rude. Sorry, but being yourself is not a good thing if who you are is an a---er, a jerk wad.

13) DO NOT bring up things said in confidence in a public conversation. Or post them. Anywhere. It's not always easy to tell if the conversation you've had with someone is something they want kept in confidence, so before you relate your hilarious anecdote, think. If your positions were reversed, would you want them to tell this? Is there any possibility you should ask them before telling? More to the point, are you okay with them telling everyone about the time you were in high school and stalked the lacrosse team captain only to throw up on his shoe? Because payback is awful.

14) Apparently always end their lists with 13 useful things and one that they're too tired to think up, but 13 is a horrible number. Right? Right.

*Disclaimer: I do not claim to be a wholly considerate person. I'm still working on it. :-)

Happy 2016! Blog sale coming soon, YouTube plans, and other updates!

by noreply@blogger.com (Crystal Valentine) @ Valentine Kisses

Hello, Beautiful!

Happy 2016 to you! Welcome back to all my followers, and welcome to all my new ones. I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you for all the support over the years that I've blogged, especially over the past two years where my life has taken a major course change and I've had trouble keeping up with everything, including this blog. Instagram is so much easier to keep up with and doesn't require everything that goes into blogging, which is why some might wonder how I'm able to post daily there but maybe only post a blog post here a few times a month.

I'd love to get back into daily blogging, but I'm not sure I'll ever get to that point again. I've been really focused at my work, and I've fallen in love with what I get to do for a living. I'm the marketing coordinator at Valley Green Naturals - but it goes far beyond just marketing. I'm kind of a do-it-all and do-whatever-is-needed type of person and I love it. I mean, truly for the first time I really love my job. I seem to even work when I'm not on the clock, and it's not because I have to but because I want to. I'm trying to be better about turning off my work brain when I get home, but when you love your job it becomes hard to do that.

However, even with as busy as my schedule tends to be, my goal for 2016 is to try and be regular with blogging again. I even want to start a YouTube channel! I know I've mentioned that in the past, and I actually have a channel but haven't uploaded a video in years. I need to actually pull out the camera and just do it. I'm probably going to start a YouTube channel for my work too, so maybe if I do that, I'll be more inclined to do videos for my blog too. I'm not making any promises though, it can be tough to keep up with just day-to-day life things (like laundry, taking care of my great dane, and most importantly, taking care of my almost 11 year old son), but I can try, right?! You're damn right I can!

So my next blog sale....

I constantly get emails, DM's through Instagram, comments, etc. that ask when my next blog sale will be. I always say "I'm not sure, but soon" because I've gotten into a habit of clearing out my makeup collection around 2 to 3 times a year. The last blog sale I had (back in the summer), was pretty big and I purged literally thousands of items. I didn't think it would be possible to purge my makeup again anytime soon, but I think I actually can. I started to pull items and combined with the few items left over from my last blog sale, I think I will be able to launch this one with a great selection -- and as always, great prices!

But of course, I'm not sure WHEN it will launch. Just know that I am in a major - and I mean MAJOR - purging mood with everything in my life. It's been a cycle I've been going through for at least the past month or two and I'm able to let go of items easier than ever now. I'm going to be selling a bunch of things - not just makeup - and the little things that are easy to ship, like makeup, nail polish, hair stuff, jewelry, and maybe even clothes, I want to try and list all together in the same blog sale (to help save on shipping for anyone interested).

So really, the next blog sale will include more than just makeup! And I'm going to offer UPS shipping because of that, which breaks my standard USPS only rule. It still will be open only to those in the United States, and I know that frustrates a lot of my followers out of the country, but honestly, international shipping costs are outrageous and would make buying the items completely not worth it.

Anyway, enough rambling... time for me to get back to purging my items and figuring out what I can let go of in 2016 and gain some cash to pay bills!

Happy 2016 everyone! Make it a memorable one!

xoxo with love & beauty,

Crystal Valentine

Long overdue update

Hi guys,

I'm so sorry for not posting reviews in such a long time. I've been extremely busy with work. Though I am still constantly trying out new products, I haven't had the energy to blog. Working 12+ hours a day will do that to you. :-(

I just wanted to say hello and let you know that I do plan on reviewing products again! And if you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

RoC Multi-Correxion Update

by noreply@blogger.com (Rachel) @ Minimalist Beauty Reviews

Hi everyone! I'm so sorry for neglecting this blog. I've started working (unpaid, sadly) and my hours are so hectic that I am deadbeat by the time I get home every day. I will try to update more often (I know I keep saying this) so please continue to stop by!

Anyway, I wanted to give a little update on my experience with RoC Multi-Correxion products since I last wrote the previous review. During the initial stages, after I purchased the Skin Renewing Serum, I used the product basically every day until my skin started feeling a little dehydrated and sensitive. As you may or may not remember, I was using it daily because the one time I stopped initially, the tiny fine lines under my eyes came back. So I wanted to really give my skin more time to reap its effects.

However, what I didn't realize until after I wrote my first review was how terribly drying daily RoC use became for my skin. After about 3 weeks of daily use, I developed massive peeling and flakiness on my neck, and my skin burned every time I applied product to it after cleansing. I had no choice but to gently exfoliate and patiently apply a moisturizing serum and cream to my skin every night. I also had to temporarily switch sunscreens, since my normal one dries matte so it can be drying. During this time, I did not completely stop using RoC--I probably applied it at night either once or twice a week.

Now, my skin has completely recovered, and it has definitely experienced lasting improvements. When I stop using RoC for a couple of days, my skin, especially around my eyes, still looks well rested, plump, and creaseless. Thus, I definitely do think that using RoC or products with retinol can afford you REAL results, not just a temporary allusion.

So, with this I conclude that RoC Multi-Correxion is definitely a wonderful product-line to add into your skincare regimen. However, be sure to proceed with caution. I was overeager when I saw the good results and used the products too frequently at first, and wound up irritating and drying out my skin. If you have oily, non-sensitive skin, you are probably lucky in that you don't need to acclimate your skin to retinol first. However, for everyone else, make sure you start out slow with RoC--even if it means it'll take a longer time before you see any results.

I am slowly dying...

by noreply@blogger.com (Rachel) @ Minimalist Beauty Reviews

I'm putting reviews on a hiatus because of finals! I have about 40 pages to write in the next 9 days; I don't know if that's humanly possible for me but I'm going to try my best...my school doesn't have a 24/7 library, which I find extremely annoying.

Besides turning me into a zombie, not sleeping is also causing my allergies to go haywire. I have a problem with rubbing my itchy eyes until they burn in pain and lately I've noticed little fine lines appearing underneath my eyes O___O NOOOO!!!!! Any beauty bloggers who have massive allergies too? TIPS?! I'm too young for wrinkles...especially if they're self-induced!!!!

Anyway, see you all in June--I just want to graduate already!

How to Create Your Own URL Shortener

How to Create Your Own URL Shortener

by Stephanie Drenka @ Stephanie DrenkaStephanie Drenka

One of the coolest branding techniques, which is also relatively easy to implement, is the custom URL shortener. URL shortening is a technique to convert a long URL (site or page address) to a shorter version. When someone accesses the shortened address, the browser redirects to the original (large) url address. It is also called URL redirection or URL redirect. According to Jakob Nielsen, “Shorter URLs are better since people often type them manually.” Most digital publications and prominent websites these days have their own branded URL shorteners, ie: http://on.mash.to for Mashable.com links. It’s a fun way to help increase […]

I have a confession to make… I don’t care much about wine. Growing up, my parents rarely drank alcohol, save for dad’s occasional beer at a hockey game. We were a sparkling apple cider family, and that was fine with me. At the age of 31, my palate remains unrefined. The only wines I drink are typically Riesling or Moscato and maybe Pinot Noir, if steak is on the menu. Beauty Squared Round-Up for August 23, 2015

by noreply@blogger.com (beautysquared) @ beauty squared

Good morning! I hope it's a beautiful day wherever you are.

Here's the Beauty Squared Round-Up for this past week!

  • Combination skin - that's your skin type, right? Well, we all have combination skin, so really, that means there is no such thing and we're all being taken in by marketing. Read the argument here.
  • Do you wash your face in the morning and at night? Here's why you should maybe not wash your face when you wake up.
  • The external reveals what's internal, so drink these teas for better skin.

  • Three skin care tips you may not have heard before - exfoliating in the morning, skip moisturizer on your nose, and tint your windows.
  • Ways petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can help with your beauty and skincare routines.
  • 14 vegan beauty products, some of which you might already be using/aware of.
  • Retinol is a form of vitamin A and a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent fine lines and wrinkles, reduce discolouration and help manage eczema and acne. It can be expensive, but there are drugstore versions of retinol that aren't - some of the best.
  •  Did you know your makeup primer can be used on your lips, in your hair and as a makeup corrector?
  • Want to see what makeup colours will be in style next spring and summer? The British Beauty Blogger has photos and swatches of MAC's Trend Forecast Palettes for Spring/Summer 2016.
  • MUA Andrew Sotomeyer shows how to use eyeliner to enhance a variety of different eye shapes - hooded, almond, round, downturned and monolid.
  • Seemingly inspired by the OCC Lip Tars and the Too Faced Melted lip colours, MAC has its Vamplify collection coming out this week. The British Beauty Blogger has some swatches here, and Temptalia has the preview photos here.
  • In defense of "tacky" makeup: glitter, bright colours, temporary tattoos.
  • Transforming the makeup looks you wore when you were younger so that you can wear them now (and not look like you're trying to be a teenager).
  • Does your skin have yellow undertones? That means you've got cool-toned skin. Here are some makeup colours/products that will suit you.
  • Permanent makeup: would you ever? Here's what you should know before considering it.
  • Are you afraid of wearing lip gloss? (I am).
  • Hangnails: what are they, how do you get them and how do you get rid of them?
  • Deep side-parts, and I mean DEEP side-parts. They're not for the faint of heart.
  • And finally, this great article in the NY Times Magazine looks at Kevyn Aucoin's second book, Making Faces, that was, for many (including me) a revelatory inspiration and continues to be to this day.

Jar Questions 86, 4, 288

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

Firstly, tomorrow is my first solo day this block! For the next 2 weeks I will be the teacher in the class. I'm excited, but also nervous. Wish me luck!

Rebecca had her first date this weekend, you'll have to ask her how it went, cuz I'm no snitch. ;D

Also: HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Shantel! I know I didn't join in much on the festivities, I didn't want to impose on family time. ^_^

On to the questions!

Question 4: Describe a typical day in elementary school.

Ha, the one I'm in now or MY elementary school? XD I'm guessing the latter. Well, typically the day would begin with breakfast at 7. We'd be to school at 8, and first track (which went to school from 8 to 2) was in Core classes. These were the classes that taught math and reading. I think that's all they taught, math and language arts in general. The second track students arrived at school at 9:30 (they went from 9:30 to 3:30) and went to Specialties. You had 2 specialties a day: they were semester long classes. The first have of the year you'd have Art and Social Studies as specialties, the second half you'd have Science and Music. Anyway, so after lunch the first track and second track "swapped," with first track going to specialties and second track coming to core. It was fun, because the tracks would leave notes and stuff for their "counterparts" to find. I was first track so my day ended at 2. Depending on the time in my life, I've walked home, carpooled home, but mostly been driven home by Mommy. Then came snack, piano practicing and homework. After that we could play until dinnertime. After dinner was family time until bed at 8:00. Ah, those were the days! ^_^

Question 86: Did you go camping as a child? Share an experience or memory.

We did! We used to go to this place called Hobble Creek. I don't know if I'm blurring times, but there was this one camp site we went to that had...I'm not sure if it really was steep or if this is just a child's memory, but it had this really steep trail going up just a bit away from the camp site. It went up, then leveled out and went across. We kids used to go up as far as we dared, then scooch down real quick on our boosers. Anyway, this one time I was determined that I would climb that trail (I really like hiking and was pretty stubborn). Anyway, I made it to the fairly flat part, and felt pretty proud of myself until I heard Mommy calling for me. I realized I couldn't get down! Uncle Daniel tried to tell me how to plant my feet and come down sideways, but I just sort of sat down and couldn't budge. So he had to come get me! I still have lots of fond feelings for that camp site.

Question 288: Tell about your social life as a teen: dances, football games, outings, church functions, etc.

Oh, there's SO much to TELL! XD Honestly, not really. In my family school was a time to learn. I wasn't a real social butterfly. I had acquaintances in all of my classes, but only one really close friend. I don't like loud music or "dance" parties (read: bob your head up and down and drink punch), so "clubbing" was out. I guess I'll tell you about Show and Chamber. It was the "high choir" at our high school. We had such fun! There were a few drama kids in there and they always livened the place up. We'd burst into song at random times on the way to performances. I love our concerts, because it was always like getting together with friends and singing, not some uptight thing. We had classes together every day of the week, and rehearsals after school. We had fun just hanging out and being doofy!

Time for another post! Questions 342, 332, 161

by noreply@blogger.com (Elizabeth) @ Learning to Fly

NOTE: I found an old, unpublished post of mine! Here ya go!

April 20, 2010: Well, my last day of student teaching was last Friday. It was so sweet, we had a pizza party for lunch and had the Big Bowns Drawing for big prizes. I had fun, but I miss "my kids" already!

This week has been and is going to be crazy. I'm doing my last few days of work, cleaning and packing (which at this point seems like it will never end), getting ready for graduation and for the big get-together on Saturday. So much to do!

Okay, on to questions:

Question 342:Write about feeling loved and by whom.

Just feeling loved in general? Wow, there are SO many times I've felt loved...it's hard to just think of one.

Okay, I've got one.

I had some really stressful things going on, had a cough, and I just couldn't sleep. For days. I mean, I was literally getting sick with stress and frustration, but I was still unable to sleep at all. My grandma came in and stayed with me. Now keep in mind she's...well, I don't know how old she is, really, but she's not young enough to stay up all night like us spring chickens, you know? But she came up and stayed with me, rubbing my back and getting me water and making me drink vinegar to help the cough (which was gross, but it worked somewhat). She was probably so tired, and yet she did that for me and it helped. I remember thinking, "Wow. She really loves me." I was able to sleep that night, and was much better then next morning.

Question 332: Write about how a prayer was answered.

This is a hard one, because a lot of those times are pretty personal and sacred. I guess one that was pretty impactful was this time Mommy and Daddy were going to Salt Lake for their anniversary. I prayed for them to be safe and then forgot about it. I was at work laminating when I got a call from Mommy: they'd been in an accident. I just went cold, but Mommy assured me that they were okay, although the car was totaled. The accident happened in such a way that we all knew that they had been protected. I was pretty shaken up, because I had prayed for them to be safe without thinking much about it; I just always pray for them to be safe when they go somewhere. I was really glad my prayer was heard and answered.

Question 161: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully married with a few kids. With some sort of church calling...I'd like to be a stay at home mom at that point, but who knows?

Huge DDF Haul

by noreply@blogger.com (Rachel) @ Minimalist Beauty Reviews

I was excited when I got my email from Hautelook, an exclusive, invitation-only private sale site, this morning because one of the brands on sale was DDF (Doctor's Dermatologic Formula)! Everything is 50% off; this is awesome because DDF is such an expensive brand. I've heard pretty good things about it so I jumped on this immediately.

What I bought:
- Cellular Revitalization Age Renewal Cream
- Mesojection Healthy Cell Serum
- Glycolic 10% Toning Complex
- Glycolic 10% Exfoliating Oil Control Gel
- Intensive Holistic Lightener Serum

Damage: ~$200

I kind of wanted to purchase more, but I didn't want to spend an exorbitant amount, although I feel like I spent way too much already. The items are all final sale so hopefully they'll work well for me. If not, you'll definitely hear about it here in due time :-)

Has anyone ever tried these before? Any thoughts on how well they worked for you?

I really wanted to also get the RMX Essential Packets since they contain colustrum (Makeupalley tells me this is produced in human mother's milk!) and I can't find them being sold anywhere else anymore, but the description didn't say how many were in the box, which costs $100 even with the discount. Plus, I couldn't find the ingredients. That's just way too much for me to spend on something that might not even work or be returnable..

Anyway, if any of you are interested in buying DDF at Hautelook or just browsing the site, feel free to leave a comment with your email address if you don't have membership. I will send you an invite, never fear! ;-)

Agent Carter Declassified 10: Valediction

by Jill Scharr @ FemPop Magazine

Alex and I talk narrative pacing, Peggy's relationships, and how the show commits -- or fails to commit -- to its portrayal of Peggy's postwar (and post-Captain America) role. How does the show frame Peggy? And by contrast, how do audiences see her? How much of Peggy Carter is what the show gives us, and how much is what fans interpret (and in a sense create) for her? This led us to a fascinating tangent about queer subtext, authorial intent, and fanfiction.
