Blinc Mascara Ulta

MAC Cult Favourites Review

by Alana @ Island Beauty Habits

When I was younger MAC was the cool girl makeup. When it hit the scene there really wasn’t anything else like it that you could buy in store, at least not here on the Island anyways. And in those days (that makes me sound old) online shopping was pretty much nonexistent. There was no Sephora or Ulta, you either had the department store or the drugstore. But even though it was so popular I never really got into it. I think it was because I had heard horror stories of the foundation reeking havoc on teenage acne prone skin. And also I simply couldn’t afford it back then. So, I guess you could say that it fell off my makeup radar. Especially since Sephora came rolling into town on its gilded chariot to rescue all of the makeup deprived. But there were always those few MAC products that I kept hearing about. Those cult favourites that would show up on beauty blogs over and over again started to wear me down. So the other day I headed down to my local MAC store and picked six of some of MAC’s most sought after products. I purchased shades that are super popular and that would also work with my skin tone. I was super excited to see what all the fuss was about and if these products could live up to the hype! MAC Studio Face and Body Foundation I really, I mean really like this foundation. I am aware that I could probably use more coverage than this sheer to medium foundation provides but I really don’t care. My skin still looks like my skin but better, with the foundation being almost undetectable. It feels super lightweight and moisturizing without being oily or tacky feeling and it doesn’t settle into any fine lines! An absolutely perfect summer time foundation. My favourite way to apply it is with a foundation brush or my fingers. In my experience a damp sponge absorbs too much of this water based makeup and you end up wasting a lot of product. I do recommend that you let this foundation set and dry down before you finish with a setting powder. Only because it remains a bit slippy for a few minutes and your powder brush could move it around a bit. I do like to powder my T-zone when wearing this because it can be a little too dewy otherwise. I would recommend this foundation to anyone with dry or combo skin who is looking for a lightweight, sheer foundation. If you have extremely oily skin this might not be the one for you. Lustre Lipstick in Syrup One of my favourite beauty bloggers Fleur DeForce has talked about this lipstick for years. She claims that it’s one of those no fail shades that will look good on just about everyone. And you know what? I think she’s right. It’s nothing bold or statement worthy, just a very wearable subtle dusty pink. As flattering as the shade is, one of my favourite things about it is the formula. It has a very juicy appearance on the lips and feels very comfortable and moisturizing. I will be heading back to MAC to check out more of the colours in the Lustre range because damn it’s nice! Syrup is definitely a hand-bag-shade that applies very easily without too much fussing around. Love it! Eyeshadow in WoodWinked I know I said earlier that I never really got into MAC when I was younger. Well I kinda lied. I did buy or was gifted a few things back in the day. I got my first set of makeup brushes for my birthday?? from MAC and I also got WoodWinked. But that was it. I do remember loving this eyeshadow and so when I saw it on a MAC cult favourites list I gave my younger self a mental pat on the back. Atta girl, always picking those dope shades. It was good then and it’s still good now. A highly pigmented, easy to work with shadow in a terrific shade. It’s a very warm coppery bronze with a gold sheen. In the picture above it’s the only eyeshadow I’m wearing. All over the lid, blended up into the crease and then smudged into the lower lash line. I think it is the perfect shadow for a quick, bronzy, subtle smokey eye! Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly Long touted as the mother of all eyeshadow bases, MAC’s paint pots have a lot to live up to. Painterly is a shade that would suit most fair to medium skin tones when used as an eyeshadow base. Meaning you’re using it to even out eyelid discolouration and to prep the lids for budge-proof shadow. It’s like a concealer for your eyelids, basically. It looks quite pinky on the swatch above but looked more beige to me on the lid. Although not noticeable, the pink undertone could have an overall brightening effect to the eye area if worn alone, which is nice. I for one have used it as a base for WoodWinked everyday for the last week. I do think it evens out my eyelids nicely and my shadow has been staying on all day without creasing too. So it’s great, but I do also think you can get the same result with a little concealer and setting powder as well. It’s just not a product that I will use as part of my everyday makeup routine. But it will come in handy and save a step when I’m going for a more full on eyeshadowy look. Bottom line is you don’t neeeeed this, but it’s nice. ∗ swatch above is of Painterly paint pot and Syrup lipstick Mineralize SkinFinish in Soft & Gentle A holy grail highlighter for a countless number of beauty enthusiasts, Soft & Gentle was a top priority on my list. It’s claim to fame is that it’s a natural looking champagne highlight that will work for everybody. Even those who are new to the highlight game. I do agree, this is an exceptional highlighter that stays true to its name. It’s soft, it’s gentle, it’s not overpoweringly pigmented and remains fairly natural looking on the skin. It has a glisten to it that mimics the look of healthy, glowing skin. But that being said I do think that you could come close to this kind of glow at a much more affordable price point. Highlighters have come a long way since the launch of soft & gentle and many drug store brands have some beautiful options. I’m not mad at it though and do think it’s worth the purchase if it’s in your budget. As for me I will continue happily highlighting myself with this until I glow like a disco ball. Prep & Prime Fix + A lot of you may think that this makeup setting spray trend is silly, but I kind of love it. For someone like me who usually requires a powder to prevent looking oily throughout the day and who also has fine lines that the powder settles into, these sprays have been a godsend. It takes away the powdery look to my makeup which can be really aging. And they also are phenomenal for refreshing my makeup part way through the day. I have tried a few that I love, one from GlamGlow and a First Aid Beauty one as well. Also just straight up rose-water can work well. The biggest difference I’ve noticed in sprays specifically geared towards setting makeup compared to spray toners is the delivery system. MAC Fix+ and the GlamGlow spray for instance have a wonderful fine mist that doesn’t disturb all your hard makeup work. Where as a rose-water spray may shoot out a little more harshly and leave you looking a bit splotchy. As for the formula of Fix+, it’s nice. But I believe the major key here when looking for a setting spray is 100% the delivery. So head to MAC or Sephora and look for ingredients that you like and also what you want out of your spray. Do you want it to keep your makeup matte? Or do you want added hydration? Then spritz those demos everywhere and look for one with a nice even and fine mist. Bottom line – you don’t necessarily need Fix +, but if you are a makeup junkie you gotta at least try a setting spray as your finishing touch. I hope you enjoyed this MAC Cult Favourites Review! Let me know in the comments below if you have any must haves from MAC! xo

The Work Edit by Capitol Hill Style

Dear Belle, Do you have a mascara you love?  I seem to be on a never ending search for a great mascara. PF I am a longtime devotee of Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara.  It gives nice volume and length, and it doesn’t flake off by the end of the day.  (Raccoon eyes are not chic.) A few weeks ago, I switched to Maybelline The Falsies Push-Up Mascara.  The volume isn’t quite as nice as with the 2000 Calorie, but the length is good.  The formula also doesn’t flake or feel sticky or heavy.  It’s a really good mascara, I just wish the brush was better at getting the small lashes. Lastly, if you have sensitive eyes, I recommend Blinc mascaras.  They form a tube around your lashes to give long-wear with no flaking.  But the formula is easy to remove, so you don’t irritate your eyes.

Sephora gave out samples of Tarte Lash Hugger, and OMG it is the mascara I was searching for! Like you, I have tried a lot of them, and most end up clumping or flaking onto my face halfway through the day. Tarte not only stayed put, but does a great job of filling in and elongating my sparse little lashes. There are days I forego eyeliner and just use the mascara, and it's fine.

I bought the larger tube soon after, and I have not regretted it.

A few weeks ago, I needed to pick up a new toner. I thought about just repurchasing my favorite, the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner, but being me, I wanted to see what else was out there. I was already on Ulta's website (that's where I get my Mario Badescu products from), so I looked around and a toner from Michael Todd caught my eye. It was online only, so I had to purchase it from the website, which meant that I had to add more products to get to the $50 threshold for free shipping...and then I had to add more products to get free shipping after using my coupons and, well, now you get to see a mini haul!

DIY Eyelash and Eyebrow Serum Update

by Alana @ Island Beauty Habits

Rachel and I are back with our DIY Eyelash and Eyebrow Serum Update, finally!! It’s been 3 whole months since our original post where we walked you through the making of the serum and showed you our before pictures. Originally we had planned on doing a 2 month update but a little something happened to Rachel right around that time….. While doing a little clean up outside around her new house Rachel got a little too close to a bonfire and actually singed the tips of her lashes and brows right off! Have you ever had that happen to you? You’re left with lashes with little white dots on the end. Totally figures that would happen?! She was so worried that it was going to effect our little experiment she had to work up the nerve for two days to tell me about it. And of course, I was just glad that nothing more serious happened to her! It’s just a little something for you guys to keep in mind when checking out our before and after pictures. The Serum As far as the actual serum goes, there is a change to the mixture that I would recommend and will do myself on my second batch. I am going to omit the aloe vera gel for version 2.0. It separated from the oils and ended up just sitting at the bottom of the tube. It was mainly added for consistency in the first place, so if it’s not going to join the oil party and help with that then it can just leave, thank you very much. You reap more benefits from the oils anyways, so it’s not a huge loss. Now let’s get on with the before and after pictures, then we’ll wrap it up with some final thoughts! Before & After Images on the left are before’s, images on the right are after’s  Rachel’s Brows You can see a significant “fill in” under the arch of Rachel’s brows. And you could even say the brow itself is slightly denser all around. I did Rachel’s makeup after this shot and was able to give her a stronger, bolder brow by utilizing all that new growth! Rachel’s Lashes Ok, so no big change here. Maybe even a tad shorter?? Let us not forget the bonfire incident! But, in saying that her lashes still look nice and healthy and lifted. Also the exact angle of the photo was challenging to duplicate. We tried!   My Brows I can really see a difference in this picture!! The tail of my brow appears to have beefed up a lot and that was exactly what I wanted. I don’t notice a huge difference everyday when I look in the mirror. But, it really becomes apparent when I go to fill in my brows. Most days I just brush them up with a clear brow gel and I’m good to go. Or I’ll just add a touch of pencil along the lower part of my brow to tidy them up, slap on some brow gel and call it done. Where as before the serum, I did quite a bit more filling in. My Lashes Again nothing insane as far as results go. When looking at the pictures I could say maybe my lashes are denser and darker looking. In terms of length there is no real significant change. Much like my brows I notice the most difference when putting on my makeup. My lashes look longer and thicker after putting on mascara and I don’t seem to need as much.   Final Thoughts Did we discover “the natural answer” to sparse brows and stubby eyelashes? No, probably not. Is there another natural answer out there today that is a miracle? Doubtful. If anything I think our serum works wonderfully to nourish and care for the lashes and brows that we currently have. And mayyybe it promotes a bit of growth too. Over the last few months I have noticed positive changes to my brows and lashes, so for that reason I will definitely keep using the serum. The 2.0 version that is. So, I guess the experiment continues and I’m really excited to see more great results! There are other avenues to explore that can give you some more guaranteed results: • Latisse is always an option if you’re desperately wanting longer lashes and thicker brows. But you would have to be willing to accept the potential side effects of using this prescription medication. • Eyelash extensions give your lashes a mega temporary boost. • Your eyebrows could get a fill-in with a little micro-blading. A brow tattoo technique that is blowing up in popularity. You got options girl! xo

New at the Drugstore – Lash Paradise Mascara

by Alana @ Island Beauty Habits

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted! This summer has got me feeling a bit scattered and a bit awesome all at the same time. Kids are off school, the weather is finally amazing and life takes on a whole new rhythm. It’s an adjustment, but a good one. I’m going to try my very best to post weekly throughout the summer, but TBH it might not always be possible. For the majority of the summer I will be out of range of Wi-Fi, which is great for reconnecting to the real world, but not so great for keeping a blog up and running. I do have some awesome summer posts planned so I won’t be completely MIA, but I just wanted to keep you guys in the loop! Ok, so enough babble, let’s get into why your really here. Lashes! Lashes make such a huge difference to an everyday look. They help us look awake and pulled together with very minimal effort and skill required. And once you find a good mascara that checks all your boxes – i.e. volume, lift, curl, separation it quickly becomes a staple in your makeup bag. I recently tried a much raved about mascara that I think could be the most perfect one I’ve tried to date. So, if your current mascara isn’t fulfilling your eyelash dreams then this one might just do it for you!  Lash Paradise Mascara L’Oreal’s Lash Paradise has been the talk of mascara town since its release a few weeks ago. I managed to grab the last two on the display at my local drugstore (one for me and one for Rachel), so I believe the hype has spread beyond the makeup obsessed. It has been compared to another very popular mascara – the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (cringe worthy name, wicked product). Not only is the outside packaging very similar – both come in a light pink tube. The formula and brush are also almost exactly the same. However, the biggest difference between the two is the price – with the Too Faced Mascara coming in at $30 and the Lash Paradise at around $10 (depending on where you buy). Being the proud owner of both brands I can honestly say that I prefer the Lash Paradise. The brush itself is slightly thinner than the BTS brush and that really makes a huge difference for application. It’s just so much easier to get every lash from the inside to outside corners coated in mascara. Giving you amazingly full lashes. Here’s a before and after pic from the side: As you can see you get amazing lift, curl and volume. And BTW this is without curling my lashes. Now here’s a straight on view: Bam! That is a full lash, don’t ya think?! After just one coat they are practically rubbing up against my in-serious-need-of-grooming eyebrows. And after a full day of wear I had no serious issues with smudging or flaking at all. My final verdict on this mascara is that I LOVE it and you should get it, get it now and thank me later when you’re in paradise!  xo

Are there cruelty-free brands at Dermstore? You may be surprised! This online retailer is starting to carry a lot more cruelty-free brands. Even some of the most popular cruelty-free brands found at Sephora, Ulta, or Nordstrom. For many consumers, big online shops like Dermstore are one of the main places where they purchase cosmetics, skin care, and hair care. May Favourites 2017

by Alana @ Island Beauty Habits

Here we are heading into summer, finally!  I can’t tell you how excited I am for some heat, long summer nights and days at the lake. We try to pack as much summer activities in as possible, seeing that we only get about 3 hot months a year. So suffice it to say summer is a very busy season for all of us! As you may have guessed from the title this post is all about May Favourites. That time of the month when I fill you in on some beauty bits and whatever else I’ve been loving over the last month. I hope you find some summer inspo!   MVMT Watches I couldn’t wait to share this first favourite with you guys! I’m sure you’ve been seeing watches like these around. Simple, white, large faced watches with pale leather straps. I loved the look and knew I wanted to get one, but I was having a hard time deciding what colour of strap to choose. Should I go for the blush colour, which is very popular pick these days. Or would I be better of with the more versatile grey? I looked at a lot of different brands online, which led my social media sites to promote watches to my feed around the clock! So when the MVMT (pronounced movement) watches came up they already knew I was interested. The thing that’s so awesome about these watches though is that they are affordable and they have super easy detachable straps. So I didn’t have to choose just one colour strap, because I could buy extras! And as you can see, that’s exactly what I did.   I bought the Rodeo watch with the blush strap and an extra white and grey strap to go along with it. You can see in the picture above the little lever that pushes the pins in and out make changing out the straps really easy. I’m so happy with how this watch looks and have been switching things up whenever the mood strikes. I highly recommend! Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream The Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream was a bit of a splurge! It’s like stupid expensive, but I just could not resist the smell of this cream any longer! It’s like a sweet yet sexy and totally irresistible smell. Every time I popped into Sephora I would make a bee-line for it just to have a giant sniff. Then I would hum and haw about buying it for a bit before ultimately walking away. It’s like we had this tortured relationship. So during the last Sephora spring sale I thought, “ok, it’s time to put an end to this, we must be together!” and happily I added it to my cart. And let me tell you it is love. A love that won’t last forever, but I am trying to make it last as long as I can. Right now I’m treating it like pure gold and only using it on days when I want to smell extra amazing and have a little extra glow to my skin. Because yes, there is a slight shimmer in this cream. It was undetectable to me at first, but as soon as you step into the sun you will see the sparkle. It will be great for tanned summer time legs! Not only is the smell and feel of this cream amazing it also is supposed to tighten the skin due to the addition of guaraná extract. A native Amazonian plant whose fruit contains one of the most potent forms of caffeine on the planet. You just can’t lose with this cream, if you can get over the sticker shock!   Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 This sunblock has made a recent return to my routine and I couldn’t be more happy to have it back. It has just a slight tint to it which makes it perfect to wear on its own and it also plays well with makeup over top. It has a very liquidy texture that spreads easily and evenly and dries down to a natural skin like finish. I find a lot of sunblocks out there are either way too greasy or too matte and drying. This one has a perfect balance where your skin just looks like skin. If you’re in the market for a new screen, I promise you this one is amazing.   Physicians Formula Organic Wear BB Cream I did a little post not that long ago all about clean, natural makeup. And this little number was my top pick, hands down. I just had to include it in this monthly favourites because I’ve been wearing it non-stop. It’s that perfect everyday amount of coverage that feels so comfortable on the skin. And the best part is it’s free of many nasty chemicals found in a lot of other brands. So, you can feel good about having this as your everyday face product. Check out my clean makeup post for a more in-depth review.   CoverGirl Full Lash Bloom Waterproof Mascara We had a few really hot days in May and I was starting to feel like summer was upon us and here to stay. Of course it didn’t last, but during that time I started to have a real smudge issue. My mascara would melt and smear off my lashes, so by the end of the day it was a bit of a mess. I came to the conclusion (I do this every year BTW) that it was time to pull out the waterproof mascara. My choice for waterproof mascara is this one from CoverGirl. I like it because it gives me very voluminous, fluffy and separated lashes. Which I feel is perfect for the summer time when my makeup tends to lean more towards a natural look. It also does not budge even in the most sweltering and sweaty situations.   Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer Not only does this bronzer smell like coconuts, it’s actually a really flattering shade too. Not too orange and not too ashy, it hits that sweet spot for a great contour and bronzer shade in one. The one odd thing about it though is the little sponge applicator. I personally don’t get how you would use it and think you could just toss it. For me, I like using it as an all over bronzing powder with a large brush or on my lids to define my crease with an eyeshadow blending brush. This bronzer has honestly become a staple in my everyday routine. I reach for it daily for quick bit of definition and glow! Let me know some of your summer time favourites in the comments! xo

I like the Chanel Inimitable Waterproof mascara. It's a bit pricey at normal retail price, but I pick it up quite cheaply when I go through duty-free

Mascara Combos

by loubsandlips @ mascara – loubsandlips

Mascara is one product that I can’t live without and I love trying (and hoarding) new ones. There’s one for volume, one for length, one that won’t clump, etc., but I have yet to find one mascara that does everything for me. I want length, volume, no clumps, and separated lashes in one tube. Apparently that is too much to ask for so I have to use different mascaras to get the look I want. After buying and trying tons of mascaras from all price points, I have found 2 winning combos that work every time and give me lashes for days! What’s your favorite mascara?

Blinc is all I wear. No smudging or flaking ever. It coats your lashes in tubes and washes off with water, not greasy remover. Brilliant.

The gimmick mascara: It slices! It dices! It curls your eyelashes!

by noreply@blogger.com (Maia) @ Below Freezing Beauty

Is it just me, or does every mascara claim to be a specialist these days? They don't just make your lashes black; they lift or separate, curl or lengthen, thicken, strengthen, multiply, falsify... I'm surprised Ron Popeil hasn't jumped on this.

That said, some of these gimmicks really work. And some of them are just – well, just gimmicks. In this video I provide a quick look at four I've tried, with mixed results.

The good

I've blogged before about two of the specialized mascaras I really like. Urban Decay's Supercurl Curling Mascara made my "best of 2011 beauty" list, and Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies has made the blog a few times, including a post of its very own back in 2010. In the video, I talk about how I use each one; they both have unique properties and require some special handling.

Also, no matter how many times I type it out, "Volum' Express" never stops seeming like a silly name. I mean, what's with the apostrophe? What is that conspicuously missing E really supposed to convey?

The bad

Two gimmicky mascaras that disappoint: Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Mascara Duo in Glam Brown Eyes has a brush that is just as oversized and unwieldy as its name, and the bonus bronze highlighting mascara doesn't do a thing for me. (Besides which, just because I have brown eyes doesn't mean bronze is a good color for me. Brown-eyed girls can have cool-toned skin, you know.) And L'Oréal Telescopic Explosion Carbon Black Mascara, with its strange, ball-shaped wand, just wasn't happening for me.

More detail in the video, including a rambling story about how I used to wear blue mascara when I was in elementary school and a lot of strange hand gestures as I try to explain how I use various mascara wands. Enjoy!
